The fishing around Rockport and Port Aransas is really hot right now. Fishing in the San Jose Island surf north of Port Aransas is unbelievable. The speckled trout and redfish bite is on fire. We are catching limits of trout for a crew of four fisherman in less than an hour when conditions are favorable. Usually light winds and small waves. Croakers are the best bait but plastics including Bass Assassin’s 5” jerk shad, top waters, and diving plugs like the old stand-by broken back Redfins are still producing. Catches include big trout (many over 20”), redfish, including oversize, flounder, Spanish mackerel, and several types of sharks. Another bonus when the seas are calm is the weekend snapper fishing. Red snapper are plentiful and there are some big snapper out there (some over 20 lbs.). Also keep a pitch rod ready for a big ling (cobia). I like a heavy spinning rod and reel spooled with 50 Lb. braided line and a 5 foot leader of 30 lb. fluorocarbon with a size 3/0 heavy duty (3X) black owner break bait hook. Almost any dead bait, cut bait , or live croaker will do the trick. Also check behind the anchored shrimp boats for ling, Bonita, Mahi-Mahi, sharks, and if you are lucky some black fin tuna. I usually trade some cold drinks with the shrimp boat crew for a bag of by-catch for chum (the little fish they catch when dragging their nets for shrimp. Sometimes you can trade a cold beverage for shrimp as well. Good luck and good fishing. Please use caution when going offshore. Give me a call at 956-607-7200 to book your unforgettable adventure.
